First, lets go back in time. In the spring of 1829, a 21-year old Joseph Smith is facing the daunting prospect of how to publish the first new book of scripture in nearly 2,000 years. At the exact same time another daring twenty-one-year-old has just purchased a printing shop in that same town. E. B. Grandin also secured a first-ever state-of-the art 1,500-pound handpress from Robert Hoe & Company in New York City. Some would view these two events as mere coincidence. But as we look back now, it is certain that it all came together by divine design. The best technology combined with top of the line materials allowed the work to proceed at a pace and quality almost unimaginable in that day. Everything about the project spoke the best that could be achieved in that day and age.

As editors and publishers of the 2020 Edition of the Annotated Book of Mormon, we asked, what if Joseph were seeking a publisher for the Book of Mormon today, wouldn’t he seek out the most advanced, state-of-the-art technology and most quality materials possible? We think that this edition represents the level of quality and workmanship that Joseph would have felt was in keeping with the sacred and precious text that had endured through the centuries to come to us in this latter-day. We hope that you, along with thousands of others, will find this treatment of the text to be in keeping with that sacred mandate. Truly, we believe this edition represents the best that can be offered in this day and age.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Most Latter-day Saints have never experienced a fully annotated Book of Scripture.
This is the Book of Mormon like you’ve never seen it. It features…
Three Levels of Annotation.

What are the Three Levels of Annotation?

  • First Level, a literary treatment and reformatting of the text without altering any content.
  • Second Level, the addition of 250 expanded insight pages. (more below)
  • Third Level, the inclusion of vast amounts of color in its many forms.

Those revisions make this edition the closest to the original manuscript ever set to print.

I have a large library of religious books, but The Annotated Edition of The Book of Mormon is the most Techni-colored, high-fidelity, high-definition, highly-researched, testimony-building, multi-dimensional roller-coaster ride through the religious history of ancient America (and the World for that matter). There are many, but it’s MAIN PURPOSE is to convince every reader that JESUS IS THE CHRIST, manifesting Himself to all nations. And for me it does that in a magnificent way.
It is a religious, spiritual, historical, archaeological, antiquities study all blended into one pictorially informative, easy-to-read and understand book. I have never seen or read an LDS scripture text this interestingly presented, thoroughly researched, and comprehensive. This book lights up one’s knowledge and understanding like the Texas sun in the middle of July.
All LDS families, seminary teachers and students, Sunday school teachers and fellow Christians, Priests, Pastors, evangelicals, and Rabbi’s can be spiritually uplifted and strengthened in their testimony of our Savior by reading this Annotated Edition.

I have many religious books and many beautifully illustrated books of the LDS faith but this is one of the most beautiful, well thought out and valuable informative books I have seen. I am so very happy that I was one of the first to receive this beautiful Book of Mormon. Every LDS family should have a copy.

First off, the production quality of this book is off the charts. It is so beautifully put together from the leather cover with the lovely picture of Christ embossed in it to the gold edges of the pages to the full colored illustrations and annotations.
Throughout the book, you will find well-researched insights and evidences interspersed through the Book of Mormon text itself. Then with the text itself, the formatting makes those passages I’ve read of the Book of Mormon many times so refreshing and invigorating to study from, with text of the Lord speaking in red, subheadings, formatting that shows poetic structures, and many other ways the formatting adds clarity and shines new light on these precious words of scripture.

The First Level (Literary Treatment)

The original textual content of The Book of Mormon has not been altered, reduced or revised; However, the formatting and its literary representation has been revised, altered and enhanced quite extensively.

This literary treatment combines verses into coherent paragraph structures then adds descriptive headers within chapters. Verse  numbers are superscripted; poetical stanzas are shown in their Hebraic forms; quotation marks and indentation identify voices of speakers; Ancient Hebraic writing forms such as chiasmus, parallelisms, and other word-patterns are shown in-context along with font colors which are used to establish textual hierarchy (importance).

First-ever Red-Letter edition of the Book of Mormon

  • Red is for the words of Deity (Jesus and the Father)
  • Blue is used for the words of angels
  • Blue italics are used when Old Testament scripture and Prophets are quoted
  • Black text is for the narrative

Font coloring shows readers how biblical and Christ-centered The Book of Mormon is.

Page 121
You can see in the page above, some of the literary treatments as well as one of the footnotes and how they are inserted on a typical page.

Twelve years in the making, this volume gives powerful testimony to the fact that the Book of Mormon is indeed a rich Hebrew literary masterpiece centered on Jesus Christ and translated through the gift and power of God.

The chief editor of the new Annotated edition, David R. Hocking of Raleigh, North Carolina, began the project more than ten years ago as a hobby and as a way of enhancing his own family’s study of the Book of Mormon. Two years before going to press, Hocking reached out to bestselling author and researcher Rodney Meldrum—whose book Exploring the Book of Mormon in America’s Heartland is the best-selling title on physical evidence for the authenticity of the Book of Mormon.

Then the breakthrough historical research from Jonathan Neville was added to the combined work. (Neville is a frequent presenter at the John Whitmer Historical association, Mormon History Association and more recently in the Joseph Smith Papers Symposium). Neville’s findings are shedding new light on early Church documents that correct numerous flawed assumptions that have been propagated for decades. These are now clarified by the new information coming from the Joseph Smith Papers Project.

At least a dozen other experts in a variety of research fields have also contributed to the work, experts in Mosaic Law, archaeology, ancient languages, Native American studies, metallurgy, 19th century Church history, cartography, anthropology, etc.

Boyd J. Tuttle is the owner/operator of Digital Legend Press, publisher of the Annotated Book of Mormon. As a contributor to the project, Boyd was responsible for the general layout of the book, the graphical look and feel, the page structure, the 1,172 entry index , many of the introductory pages, and the overall linguistic tone of the text.

Rian Nelson as director of WorksofJoseph.com website was responsible for gathering, curating and commissioning most of the artwork and maps found in this beautifully illustrated edition.

First Printing

Below is an actual photo of the first book which arrived (via Fedex) from the printer. Soon there after 5,000 more books arrived on Sept 22nd in a semi-trailer with (18 pallets) pulled into our warehouse in Lehi. Does anyone see the significance of that date?  It was never planned, it just happened.

The following is a typical page in the Annotated Edition of the Book of Mormon. The reader will see the use of headers, poetical stanzas and font colors to designate speakers (red for deity, blue for angels, and blue italics for Old Testament prophets).

One reader said, “I will never look at the Book of Mormon in the same way again!”
Page 23

Notice this particular footnote (above) is to a quote by C.S. Lewis. Throughout the text there are quotes by a number of Christian theologians such as Billy Graham, Norman Vincent Peale, Pope John Paul and others, underscoring Brigham Young’s observation:

The truth and sound doctrine possessed by the sectarian world, and they have a great deal, all belong to this Church. As for their morality, many of them are, morally, just as good as we are. All that is good, lovely, and praiseworthy belongs to this Church and Kingdom… [Emphasis added] (DBY, 3).

The Second Dimension (Insight Pages)

Beyond the literary treatment of the text, the Annotated Edition contains more than 250 added insight pages. These insight pages expand upon themes taken from the text and include:

  •      Quotations from latter-day prophets and general authorities
  •      New discoveries in Church history that support the teachings of Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, and other Church leaders
  •      Images and explanations of the many evidences of pre-Columbian Hebrew culture found in the New World; including archaeological, linguistic, and other evidences that combine to establish the divine authenticity of the Book of Mormon as described by Joseph Smith, Church leaders, and the text of the book itself.

The Annotated Book of Mormon includes over 300 full-color images, charts, graphs, maps, chronologies, genealogies, and an 18-page index with 1,142 entries all found within the 644-pages of this heirloom-quality volume.

Below is a screen capture of a typical insight page; this one refers to 1 Ne 13:14 & 1 Ne 15:14:

The Third Dimension (Color and Art)

Color is found in the form of font colors to set-off voices, color is found in the charts, tables, maps and chronologies. And finally color is shown in the form of exquisite artwork—much of it original—and worthy of a place in this sacred text.

Below is an original art piece by Clark Kelley Price:

Formatted-Page-5
Stunning art like this is found throughout the book. Can you imagine how thrilled Joseph Smith would have been if he could have included such beautiful and moving artwork in his original edition?

Another original art piece that displays the defensive fortifications as described in Alma 50:1

Formatted-Page-6-Hi-REz
Finally artwork that actually looks like the forts described in Alma chapter 50!
“…for he caused that his armies should… commence in digging up heaps of earth round about all the cities throughout all the land which was possessed by the Nephites. And upon the top of these ridges of earth he caused that there should be timbers, yea, works of timbers built up to the height of a man, round about the cities. And he caused that upon those works of timbers there should be a frame of pickets built upon the timbers round about, and they were strong and high. And he caused towers to be erected that overlooked those works of pickets, and he caused places of security to be built upon those towers that the stones and the arrows of the Lamanites could not hurt them. And they were prepared that they could cast stones from the top thereof, according to their pleasure and their strength.” (Alma 50:1)

Finally, this is an excerpt of the 18-page index:

  3. We are excited about our shipment of books. I run a shop in Palmyra New York and am convinced that this is the second most important edition of the Book of Mormon ever to be sold on Main Street Palmyra! Generations of members of the church and believers in the message of the Book of Mormon will be blessed by the work that has been done to produce this volume.

      1. Dear T.S. Koma in South Africa,
We are hoping to be able to get these books distributed into all parts of the world and you are welcome to place an order on our website for one or more copies. However, you will see that the shipping costs MORE than the book! To offset the high costs of overseas shipping, are willing to work with you and others toward that goal. If we can get a single person who is willing to serve as a point-of-contact in a given country (South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana. Australia, New Zealand, UK. France, Germany, Japan, wherever) then we will arrange for shipping an entire pallet of books by sea (which cheaper than by air). We are looking for individuals who would be willing to gather orders so that we would have enough to justify a pallet-size shipment. That person would also have collect the payments from the their fellow countrymen and be willing to handle any duties and customs matters upon arrival. We will offer a free copy of the Annotated BoM to anyone who steps up to that job. It will be a labor of love and not without challenges, but if you have experience in that area or know of someone who does, or are willing to learn, we would be happy to work with you to supply your country with as many books as you can use. Please contact us for further instructions at: orders@digitalegend.com.
        Blessings,
        Boyd Tuttle
